The Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency ICT department is working tirelessly to ensure the timely upload of pilgrims’ medical certificates as required for the Hajj process.

In line with the guidelines for Hajj 2026, the Agency’s ICT staff have been operating round the clock to guarantee that all medical records are accurately processed and uploaded within the stipulated timeframe.

Faruku Umar, this proactive effort is aimed at preventing delays and ensuring that all intending pilgrims from Sokoto State meet the necessary health requirements for the sacred journey.

In a move aimed at consolidating party unity and strengthening grassroots structures, Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has convened a strategic meeting with party executive s and elected local government officials in the state.

The meeting, held at the Kasarawa Conference Centre, brought together party executives , elected local government chairmen, vice chairmen and councillors from across the 23 local government areas.

The gathering provided an opportunity for stakeholders to brainstorm on key party matters with a view to reinforcing unity, deepening internal democracy and enhancing effective grassroots governance.

It also focused on reviewing the recently concluded party membership exercise, as well as the ward and local government congresses that produced new officers at various levels.

Addressing the participants, Governor Aliyu commended members for their commitment and active participation in the membership drive and congresses, describing the processes as largely peaceful and successful.

He emphasized the importance of reconciliation, inclusiveness and sustained cooperation among old and newly elected officials to ensure the continued growth and stability of the party.

The governor further urged all stakeholders to remain loyal, united and dedicated to the collective vision of advancing development across Sokoto State, assuring them of his administration’s unwavering support and commitment to people-oriented policies and programmes.

In his remarks, the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Isah Sadiq Achida, expressed appreciation to Governor Aliyu for providing purposeful leadership and creating an enabling environment for internal party dialogue.

He described the meeting as timely, noting that constant engagement with stakeholders remains key to sustaining the party’s dominance in the state.

Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has attributed the successes recorded by his administration to the cordial working relationship among the three arms of government in the state.

The wife of the state governor, Fatima Ahmed Aliyu, made this known while flagging off the distribution of food items to 5,000 women drawn from the 23 local government areas of the state.

The ceremony, held at the Government House Sokoto, was aimed at supporting families to break their fast with relative ease and dignity during the holy month of Ramadan.

The items distributed included rice, spaghetti, and cooking oil, carefully packaged to assist beneficiaries in preparing meals for their households.

To ensure orderliness and transparency during the exercise, the women were organised into groups representing the 23 local government areas, which facilitated a smooth and coordinated distribution process.

Hajiya Fatima Ahmed Aliyu explained that the gesture was designed to cushion the effects of economic hardship on vulnerable households, particularly widows and less privileged women, who often shoulder the responsibility of feeding their families.

She emphasised that empowering women remains central to the administration’s social intervention agenda, noting that when women are supported, families and communities prosper.

She also expressed appreciation to the Sokoto State Government for its unwavering support and commitment to programmes that directly impact the lives of women and children.

Since assuming office on 29 May 2023, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has steered Sokoto State through a period of ambitious reforms and visible development, positioning his administration as one of the most proactive in the state’s recent history.

Guided by his 9-Point SMART Agenda, Governor Aliyu’s leadership has recorded measurable progress across critical sectors — from infrastructure and education to security and social welfare — while maintaining fiscal discipline and avoiding excessive borrowing that could burden future generations.

Education has emerged as a flagship priority of the administration. Demonstrating a strong commitment to human capital development, the state allocated an unprecedented 25 percent of its 2025 budget to the education sector, surpassing many regional benchmarks. School infrastructure has been renovated and expanded, instructional materials supplied, and student welfare significantly improved. The administration increased students’ feeding allowances and introduced monthly maintenance funds for school principals to ensure timely repairs and improved learning environments.

These interventions have contributed to improved student attendance and retention rates, earning the state an Award for Excellence in Education from the All-Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS).

Beyond education, Sokoto State has witnessed significant expansion in transportation and public utilities infrastructure under Governor Aliyu’s leadership. More than 240 township roads have been constructed and rehabilitated across both urban and rural communities, easing mobility, enhancing connectivity, and stimulating commercial activities. Solar-powered streetlights have been installed along major roads in all 23 local government areas, improving public safety and extending economic activities into the night.

The administration has also prioritized access to clean water through the rehabilitation of several township water schemes, addressing longstanding challenges in water supply and improving living conditions for residents across the state.

The healthcare sector has equally experienced notable improvements through targeted investments and reforms. Numerous primary healthcare centres have been rehabilitated and equipped, while general hospitals are undergoing upgrades to enhance service delivery. A statewide free maternity care programme has been introduced to reduce maternal and infant mortality and expand access to quality healthcare services, particularly for rural and underserved communities.

Security remains a central focus of the administration, especially in a region previously affected by banditry and related challenges. Governor Aliyu has implemented strategic measures to strengthen public safety, including the procurement and distribution of over 200 operational vehicles to security agencies. The establishment of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps has further enhanced grassroots surveillance and intelligence gathering, complementing the efforts of conventional security forces. These initiatives earned the Governor an Award of Excellence for advancing security from the Movement for Social Justice.

In addition to infrastructural and security interventions, the administration has prioritized economic empowerment and social welfare programmes aimed at improving livelihoods. Thousands of youths and women have benefited from vocational and entrepreneurial training initiatives designed to reduce unemployment and promote self-reliance.

Civil servants and pensioners have also enjoyed consistent and timely payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities, while the early implementation of the new minimum wage has strengthened household income stability and boosted morale within the public service.

Governor Aliyu’s performance has attracted national recognition, including his selection as “Best Governor of the Year” by The Sun Newspaper, reflecting growing acknowledgment of his governance approach and developmental strides.

As Sokoto advances into 2026, the Governor has reaffirmed his commitment to consolidating ongoing reforms, with renewed focus on security, youth development, and sustainable infrastructure expansion. Anchored on inclusive growth and prudent financial management, the state’s development trajectory continues to move toward shared prosperity.

In our complex political landscape, tolerance is essential ingredient for effective governance.

One leader who exemplifies this is Ahmed Aliyu, the Governor of Sokoto State.
Since taking office in May 2023, Governor Aliyu has demonstrated a commendable approach towards the opposition, promoting a political culture characterized by understanding and cooperation.

Governor Ahmed represents a shift in the state’s political dynamics. His administration is marked by a commitment to fostering unity and cooperation among all political actors, regardless of their affiliations. Rather than adopting a confrontational stance toward the opposition, the Governor has sought to engage with them constructively, recognizing that a more collaborative approach can lead to the betterment of the state.

One of the key aspects of Governor Aliyu’s tolerance of opposition parties is his recognition of the importance of dialogue and constructive criticism in promoting good governance. His open-door policy invites leaders from different political groups to participate in discussions about pressing issues affecting the state. This has paved the way for a more comprehensive understanding of the diverse views and needs of the populace. By fostering constructive conversations, Aliyu has shown that governance does not have to be a zero-sum game, where one party’s gain is another’s loss.
To appreciate this there is need to recall the saga of 2019 governorship election in the state between APC and PDP.
In the wake of that election with its controversial victory by PDP, supporters of APC in the civil service, markets and even in trade unions were harassed and victimized. In 2023, when APC won the governorship election, many desired and called for retaliation but Governor Aliyu ignored them and focus on how to carry everyone along for the progress of the state.

Governor Aliyu therefore consistently prioritized the development of Sokoto State over partisan politics. His administration has focused on essential areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and agricultural development—issues that resonate universally across party lines. By attracting stakeholders from various political backgrounds to join in these initiatives, he has underscored that the common goal is the welfare of the people.

Moreover, his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability helps build trust among citizens and opposition parties alike. Regular engagement with community leaders and civil society organizations allows for a more inclusive political discourse, ensuring that the voices of all constituents are heard and considered.

Under Governor Aliyu’s leadership, Sokoto State has witnessed initiatives aimed at promoting political stability. His recognition of the contributions of the people in state affairs has not only mitigated frustrations but has also enhanced the political environment.

The Sokoto State Government has announced plans to introduce additional empowerment programmes aimed at improving the socio-economic wellbeing of women across the state.

The Wife of the Governor, Hajiya Fatima Ahmad Aliyu, made this known during a   special Iftar session with women commissioners, special advisers, senior government officials, and women leaders from the 23 local government areas of the state.

The event, held at the Presidential Lodge in Sokoto, was organised to mark the holy month of Ramadan, foster unity among women leaders, and offer prayers for the success of the administration, as well as for peace and stability in the state and the country.

Hajiya Fatima expressed appreciation on behalf of Governor Ahmed Aliyu for the unwavering support women have continued to show the present administration.

Hajiya Fatima noted that the forthcoming empowerment initiatives are designed to make women more productive and better positioned to support their families and contribute meaningfully to the society.

She highlighted ongoing skills acquisition programmes being implemented through the Ministry of Women Affairs, the Sokoto State Poverty Reduction Agency, use Sokoto State Microfinance Development Agency (SOSMEDA), and the Renewed Hope Initiative.

According to her, these programmes are equipping women with vocational skills across various trades to promote self-reliance and financial independence.

In her remarks, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Hadiza Ahmad Shagari, commended the Governor’s wife for organising the Iftar and lauded the state government’s sustained commitment to advancing the welfare and development of women in Sokoto State.

Sokoto State Governor,Dr. Ahmed Aliyu has presided over a special prayer session in honour of former Governor of the state, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, on the occasion of his 73rd birthday.

The prayer session was held at the Usman bin Affan Jumu’at Mosque Gawon Nama, Sokoto, and drew a large gathering of dignitaries, political associates, and well-wishers who came together to celebrate the elder statesman and offer prayers for his continued wellbeing.

Among those in attendance were former Governor of the old Sokoto State, Malam Yahaya Abdulkarim; the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga; the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Kabiru Ibrahim Kware; the state APC Chairman,Alhaji Isah Sadiq Achida,the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Sifawa; commissioners; special advisers; Islamic scholars; traditional rulers; business leaders; and other prominent personalities.

Special supplications were offered by five Islamic scholars: Malam Bashir Gidan Kanawa, Professor Jabir Sani Maihulla, Sheikh Yahuza Shehu Tambuwal, Malam Nafiu Dan Haja, and Malam Faruk Labbo, Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to the Governor.

The clerics prayed for Allah’s continued guidance, good health, wisdom, and long life for Senator Wamakko, while also seeking divine blessings for peace, unity, and sustained development in Sokoto State.

Born on April 1, 1953, Senator Wamakko was commended for his enduring contributions to the political and socio-economic development of Sokoto State.

The event also provided an opportunity for leaders, associates, and citizens to reflect on Senator Wamakko’s legacy as a transformative political figure who championed grassroots development, education, and infrastructural growth in Sokoto State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has released a revised timetable and schedule of activities for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, shifting key poll dates earlier following the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026.

INEC previously scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, February 20, 2027, and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for Saturday, March 6, 2027.

The original schedule was rejected by some Muslim stakeholders, who argued that the dates coincided with the Ramadan period.

This prompted the Senate to amend Clause 28 of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, reducing the mandatory notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days, thereby enabling INEC to change the dates.

The revised timetable, published by INEC via its X handle on Thursday and signed by its Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, now puts the Presidential & National Assembly elections on January 16, 2027, and the Governorship & State Houses of Assembly elections on February 6, 2027.

Other preparatory activities for the elections are scheduled to start as early as 1st April 2026.

The Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has pledged to provide additional capital support to traders after the reconstruction of the burnt section of the Sokoto Central Market is completed.

He made the pledge while hosting traders at an Iftar gathering held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Lodge in Sokoto.

Governor Aliyu thanked the traders for their patience, understanding, and continued support for his administration. He assured them that his government would continue to implement projects aimed at beautifying the state capital and strengthening commercial activities.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of traders and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

“We are working tirelessly to position Sokoto as a hub for commerce and trade in the region. This vision cannot be achieved without the support and cooperation of our traders,” he said.

He further explained that his administration has embarked on several initiatives to revitalise the state’s economy, including infrastructure development, agricultural promotion, and strategic engagement with the private sector. He assured the traders that the benefits of these initiatives would reach markets and trading centres across the state.

“Your contributions are vital to the success of our development agenda. I urge you to continue supporting this administration as we work together to build a prosperous Sokoto,” the governor added.

In their separate remarks, leaders of the traders’ association, including the State Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Chika Sarkin Gishiri, Alhaji Bello Bulaki, Alhaji Bashar Nuhu Basha, Alhaji Nafi’u Dan Haja, Alhaji Isah Maishinkafa, and Malam Muktari, commended the governor for reclaiming the market and awarding the reconstruction contract to them.

They assured him of their continued support and pledged to ensure the timely completion of the project.

The traders’ leaders also described Governor Aliyu as a people-oriented leader committed to the development of Sokoto State and prayed for his continued success and good health in steering the affairs of the state.
