Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening security and accelerating development as he received participants of Air War College Course 12, on a courtesy visit.

Governor Aliyu described the visit as an honour, noting that the team comprised strategic thinkers and future military commanders whose roles are vital to Nigeria’s security architecture and national development.

He commended the Air Force War College for consistently grooming senior officers with the knowledge and skills required to address the country’s evolving security challenges.
The Governor underscored Sokoto State’s unique position as a border state and the historic seat of the Sokoto Caliphate, emphasising its long-standing legacy in leadership, scholarship, and governance across West Africa. He said his administration places high priority on security, particularly effective border management, which is essential for safeguarding national stability and enhancing regional cooperation.

To this end, he disclosed that the state government has strengthened collaboration with security agencies through improved intelligence sharing, joint operations, and sustained logistical support aimed at curbing cross-border crimes.

Governor Aliyu further revealed that his administration has provided over 200 patrol vehicles and more than 250 motorcycles to security agencies, in addition to increasing allowances for personnel deployed to volatile areas.

He added that the state has established the state security guard corps a local security outfit to complement conventional forces, equipping them with 40 Hilux and 700 motorcycles to enhance their effectiveness.

The Governor noted that sustainable peace must also tackle socio-economic challenges such as poverty and unemployment.

He identified youth empowerment and agricultural development as key pillars of his administration’s agenda, explaining that thousands of youths and women have been trained in various vocational skills and supported with financial assistance and start-up tools.

In the agricultural sector, Governor Aliyu stated that the government has distributed improved seedlings, fertilisers, irrigation support, and modern farming techniques to farmers to boost productivity and encourage youth participation in agriculture.

He urged the participants to use the study tour to better understand Sokoto’s socio-political dynamics and contribute ideas that would strengthen policy formulation at both state and national levels.

The Governor also commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation, particularly in military operations and disaster response.

He further praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as purposeful leadership aimed at placing Nigeria on a sustainable path of progress.

Responding, the leader of the delegation, Air Vice Marshal Gambo Adamu, commended the Sokoto State Government for its impressive infrastructural development and commitment to good governance.

AVM Adamu praised the hospitality of the government and people of Sokoto State, lauding the visible transformation across the state, including newly constructed dual carriage roads, modern walkways, and ongoing large-scale infrastructure projects as evidence of visionary leadership.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 8th Sokoto State Council on Health Meeting, themed _“Accelerating Universal Health Coverage through the Implementation of the Health Component of the 9-Point Agenda of the Governor of Sokoto State,”_ Governor Aliyu stated that his administration remains resolute in improving access to quality, affordable, and sustainable healthcare services across the state.

The Governor described the council meeting as an important platform for reviewing the state’s health sector performance, assessing progress made, and formulating practical strategies to address pressing healthcare challenges.

He noted that his administration is fully aware of the current health indices in the state, particularly in the areas of maternal and child health, and is committed to implementing targeted interventions that will significantly improve healthcare outcomes.

As part of efforts to ensure equitable healthcare delivery across Sokoto State, Governor Aliyu disclosed that his administration has introduced a two-year mandatory rural posting policy for all nurses and midwives.

According to him, the policy is designed to address the shortage of skilled healthcare personnel in rural communities, strengthen healthcare services in underserved areas, and ensure that residents in remote locations have access to qualified medical professionals.

He further revealed that healthcare workers deployed to rural areas under the policy are entitled to an additional 10 percent rural allowance on their salaries as an incentive to encourage commitment, boost morale, and enhance effective service delivery in hard-to-reach communities.

Governor Aliyu emphasised that this incentive package demonstrates his administration’s dedication to supporting frontline health workers while promoting equitable distribution of healthcare services across both urban and rural areas.

The Governor also revealed that, as part of ongoing efforts to revamp the healthcare sector, 15 general hospitals are currently undergoing comprehensive rehabilitation, alongside 160 primary healthcare centres across the state.

He explained that these large-scale rehabilitation projects are aimed at upgrading healthcare infrastructure, improving the quality of medical services, and ensuring that citizens across Sokoto State have better access to modern healthcare facilities.

Governor Aliyu said his administration has employed over 1,400 nurses and midwives to strengthen healthcare service delivery across the state.

He added that an additional 2,400 healthcare personnel were specifically employed for primary healthcare centres, in a major effort to address workforce shortages and improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.

According to the Governor, the recruitment drive is part of his administration’s broader commitment to building a resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the growing health needs of Sokoto State’s population.

Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmed Aliyu, has approved the constitution of a nine-member committee to assess the extent of damage caused by the fire outbreak at the Old Market and Central Motor Park in Sokoto.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Governor, Malam Abubakar Bawa.

According to the statement, Barrister Gandi Umar Muhammad will serve as the acting chairman of the committee, while the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Barrister Nasiru Aliyu Dantsoho; Professor Aminu Salihu Mikailu; and Malam Bello Kofa will serve as members.

Other members of the committee include Malam Nafiu Dan Haja, Alhaji Isah Maishinkafa, Alhaji Ladan Almustapha, and Alhaji Mustapha Abdullahi Mai Dala, while Alhaji Lawal Sada will serve as secretary.

The committee’s terms of reference include assessing the extent of damage at the Old Market and Central Motor Park, identifying those affected by the inferno, determining the causes of the fire outbreak, and advising the government on measures to prevent future occurrences.

The committee is also mandated to recommend the nature and type of assistance that should be provided to victims of the disaster.

The committee has been given six weeks to submit its report to the state government.

“Second chance” refers to taking another shot at what one has missed, or making use of an opportunity to correct mistakes or shortcomings resulting from negligence, human error, or unforeseen circumstances. Whenever such an opportunity presents itself, it demands steadfastness and determination to recover what may have slipped through one’s fingers.

Many times, those given a second chance make the most of it, while others approach it with a lackadaisical attitude, failing to recognize its value.

People who aspire to improve their lives often hope for opportunities that will allow them to correct past mistakes. These are individuals who understand the purpose of life and are determined to succeed like other accomplished members of society.

It is against this backdrop that the Sokoto State Government, through the Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), introduced the “Second Chance” initiative for individuals who were unable to complete their early education and had dropped out of school.

This initiative forms part of the renewed efforts of the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, to improve education and place the state on a path of sustained growth and development.

Sokoto State, like many other northern states in Nigeria, is grappling with the challenge of out-of-school children. However, deliberate efforts are being made through policies and programmes aimed at returning these children to the classroom.

The “Second Chance” programme is designed to target young persons, particularly married and unmarried girls, who dropped out of school due to cultural or social factors. Special schools are being planned specifically for them, to receive formal education and vocational training, while boys will be integrated into existing schools across the state.

As part of the strategy to ensure the success of the programme, the Basic Education Board, under the chairmanship of Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, has set up a committee that embarked on a tour of states such as Kebbi to understudy how similar schools operate, assess the effectiveness of their curricula, and evaluate their overall impact.

Beyond access, the success of the “Second Chance” initiative will largely depend on the quality of learning delivered. It is essential that the curriculum is not only flexible but also tailored to meet the unique needs of returning learners, many of whom may have been out of school for years. Incorporating vocational skills, digital literacy, and life skills alongside basic education will ensure that beneficiaries are not only educated but also empowered to become productive members of society.

Equally important is community engagement. For such a programme to thrive, there must be sustained awareness and sensitization at the grassroots level. Traditional leaders, religious institutions, and community-based organizations all have a critical role to play in encouraging enrollment and addressing cultural barriers that may have contributed to school dropouts in the first place.

Furthermore, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms must be put in place to track progress and measure outcomes. Data-driven assessments will help policymakers identify gaps, refine strategies, and ensure that resources are effectively utilized. Transparency and accountability in the implementation process will also build public trust and encourage wider participation.

In addition, providing incentives such as scholarships, learning materials, and possibly stipends could serve as a strong motivation for participants, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Supporting learners in this way reduces the economic pressures that often force them to abandon education prematurely.

Ultimately, the “Second Chance” programme is more than just an educational intervention, it is a social re-engineering effort aimed at restoring hope, dignity, and opportunity. If properly implemented and sustained, it has the potential to significantly reduce the number of out-of-school individuals and contribute meaningfully to the long-term socio-economic development of Sokoto State.

The Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, alongside the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, led the solemnisation of ten marriages held at Senator Wamakko’s residence in the Gawon Nama area of Sokoto metropolis.

The marriages were conducted following the presentation of dowries to the brides, in accordance with Islamic injunctions, during a well-organised ceremony that strictly adhered to religious teachings.

The Sarkin Malaman Sokoto, Sheikh Malam Bello na Malam Boyi, officiated the marriage rites, offering prayers and wishing the couples a blessed union, peace, and lasting marital success.

The Governor of Sokoto State, Dr Ahmed Aliyu, has approved the constitution of the 2026 Sokoto State Hajj Delegation to oversee and coordinate all activities related to the 2026 Hajj operations in Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has directed the construction of an Islamiya school within the premises of the newly Commissioned Sheikh Buhari Sirridawa Jumu’at Mosque, located at Gidan Bawan Allah along Gidan Dare Road in Sokoto metropolis.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Ahmed Aliyu said the establishment of the Islamiya school within the mosque premises would further strengthen Islamic education and provide children and young people with access to both religious knowledge and moral upbringing.

He noted that integrating educational facilities within places of worship would help instill discipline, sound values, and spiritual development among the younger generation.

The governor also directed the construction of interlocking paving within the mosque premises to improve accessibility and enhance the environment for worshippers. In addition, he approved the inclusion of the mosque in the state government’s monthly support scheme for mosques across Sokoto State.

Providing a brief history of the project, Governor Aliyu explained that the land on which the mosque was built had been owned by Alhaji Yahaya Buhari for over twenty years and was originally intended for commercial purposes. However, following the passing of his father, he converted the property into a mosque project in honour of the late Sheikh Buhari Sirridawa.

The governor called on wealthy individuals and philanthropists to support similar religious and community development initiatives, stressing that such efforts are essential to strengthening faith, unity, and social development.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu also used the opportunity to commend Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko for his valuable advice and continuous support to government policies and programmes. He prayed to Almighty Allah to reward him abundantly and grant him continued blessings.

The mosque, built by Alhaji Yahaya Buhari in memory of his late father, Sheikh Buhari Sirridawa, the Sarkin Malaman Sokoto, was established to promote Islamic education and community development.

In his remarks, Alhaji Yahaya Buhari said the mosque was constructed as an act of charity in honour of his late father, expressing hope that it would serve as a continuous source of reward for him. He also expressed appreciation to the Sokoto State Government for its support toward the successful completion of the project.

The Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Associate Professor Jabir Sani Maihulla, commended the initiative, describing it as a significant contribution to the promotion of Islamic education and moral development in the state. He also praised the government’s commitment to supporting religious infrastructure and encouraged continued investment in faith-based education.

The representative of the Sultan of Sokoto and Wazirin Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, also commended the project, describing it as a noble act of charity and a lasting legacy that will continue to benefit the community. He prayed for Allah’s reward upon the late Sheikh Buhari Sirridawa and for continued peace and progress in Sokoto State and Nigeria.

Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko commended the initiative, describing the mosque project as an act of faith and service to humanity. He noted that it reflects deep respect for the memory of the late Sheikh Buhari Sirridawa and a strong commitment to Islamic values. He also praised the efforts of the state government in supporting religious and community development projects, praying for divine reward for all contributors.

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving N68 billion operational support to the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP).

The Emergency Plant project, initiated in 2021 as a presidential intervention, was a critical response to the prolonged power outage caused by insurgents vandalizing power infrastructure, leaving the state without electricity for nearly two years.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dauda Iliya, Governor Zulum said the swift intervention by the Federal Government under the distinguished leadership of President Tinubu is not only timely but will mitigate security challenges and improve the economic livelihoods of the people of Borno State.

“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I wish to most profoundly appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for approving N2 billion monthly OPEX intervention funding from March 2026 to December 2028, totaling N68 billion to bridge the existing funding gap in the operations of the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP),” Zulum stated.

“The MEPP intervention by the Federal Government through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has been pivotal in restoring power supply to Borno State,” Zulum stated.

“This has not only revived economic activities but has also significantly improved livelihoods and strengthened efforts to address security challenges.”

Governor Zulum noted that the power plant, commissioned in 2021 upgraded to 50 MW in December 2023, has catalyzed socio-economic development, created employment opportunities, and supported small and medium enterprises across the state.

He further explained that the availability of stable electricity has enhanced security by empowering communities economically and reducing vulnerabilities linked to insurgency and criminality.

The governor explained that the presidential approval will ensure a sustainable power supply to the Maiduguri metropolis and environs, thereby further strengthening the state’s resilience.

Governor Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with the Federal Government to ensure sustainable development in the energy sector and lasting peace and stability in the state.

The Chairman of the Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency, Alhaji Aliyu Musa, has held a preparatory meeting with members of the State’s Hajj 2026 Media and Publicity Committee as part of efforts to ensure a smooth and well-coordinated pilgrimage.

According to the Head of Information and Communications of the Agency Faruku Umar, during the meeting, the Chairman outlined the committee’s terms of reference, emphasizing its crucial role in managing information dissemination before, during, and after the Hajj exercise.

He noted that effective communication, public awareness, and media engagement remain central to the success of Hajj operations.

Alhaji Aliyu Musa explained that the committee would be responsible for educating intending pilgrims on Hajj procedures, requirements, health guidelines, travel schedules, and other relevant regulations.

He added that the committee would also provide timely updates on key developments, including flight schedules, accommodation arrangements, safety advisories, and policy changes.

The Chairman further stressed the need for strong collaboration with media organizations to ensure accurate and responsible coverage of Hajj activities.

He urged the committee to promote a positive image of the exercise by addressing misinformation and highlighting achievements recorded during the pilgrimage.

He also tasked the committee with managing communication during emergencies to prevent panic and ensure clarity, as well as documenting activities through reports, photographs, and videos for future reference and planning.

In addition, he emphasized the importance of engaging stakeholders, including pilgrims, government agencies, and international bodies, to guarantee seamless communication throughout the Hajj period.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Mallam Mohammed Umar, assured that members are fully prepared and committed to discharging their duties effectively.

The five-member committee is chaired by Mohammed Umar, while Faruku Umar serves as Secretary.

, has decried the refusal by Employers of Labour in the Country to employ qualified Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) into their workforce.

Speaking in an Exclusive Interview on the Sidelines of this year’s JAMB/UTME for Blind Candidates at Kano Centre, Professor Muhammad Bello said Thousands of highly educated and skillfully hands-on trained PWDs are abandoned roaming the streets jobless.

He explained that ‘other than one form or the other of disability or a physical challenge’ Persons with Disabilities are talented and intelligent. “Those tried, engaged and shouldered with responsibilities are doing well and their Key Performance Indicators, KPIs, surpasses their able-bodied working colleagues”.

Speaking in an emotionally laden tone, Yahuza Bello a Professor of Mathematics who is Kano Centre Coordinator of the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group, JEOG, organizers of the UTME for Candidates with Special needs, recalled how he recently nearly shed tears seeing a deaf graduate of Chemistry doing a menial job as a daily paid Labourer at a private residential building construction site.

He said the unemployed Chemistry graduate told him that he applied to many organizations for a job relevant to his discipline but was not engaged ostensibly because he was deaf.

A Press Statement issued in Kano by a member of JAMB Civil Society and Media Group monitoring the UTME, Abdulkadir Ahmed Ibrahim, FNGE, quoted the former BUK Vice Chancellor appealing to Community Based Organisations (CBOs), Civil Societies and other Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to engage Governments at all levels and the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) to address issues of employment discrimination against Persons with Disabilities.

He called for total compliance and full implementation of the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Legislations that mandate among others that at least 5% of public-sector jobs be reserved for people with disabilities (PWDs) and prohibits workplace discrimination.
