Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmed Aliyu, has approved the constitution of a nine-member committee to assess the extent of damage caused by the fire outbreak at the Old Market and Central Motor Park in Sokoto.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Governor, Malam Abubakar Bawa.

According to the statement, Barrister Gandi Umar Muhammad will serve as the acting chairman of the committee, while the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Barrister Nasiru Aliyu Dantsoho; Professor Aminu Salihu Mikailu; and Malam Bello Kofa will serve as members.

Other members of the committee include Malam Nafiu Dan Haja, Alhaji Isah Maishinkafa, Alhaji Ladan Almustapha, and Alhaji Mustapha Abdullahi Mai Dala, while Alhaji Lawal Sada will serve as secretary.

The committee’s terms of reference include assessing the extent of damage at the Old Market and Central Motor Park, identifying those affected by the inferno, determining the causes of the fire outbreak, and advising the government on measures to prevent future occurrences.

The committee is also mandated to recommend the nature and type of assistance that should be provided to victims of the disaster.

The committee has been given six weeks to submit its report to the state government.
