SOKOTO’S HEALTH SECTOR UNDERGOES STRATEGIC TRANSFORMATION

In today’s development landscape, healthcare is no longer just a social service, it is a critical driver of economic growth, human capital development, and societal stability. Recognizing this reality, the Sokoto State Government under Governor Ahmed Aliyu has embarked on a far-reaching transformation of the health sector, anchored on efficiency, accessibility, and measurable results.

This renewed vision reflects a deliberate shift from rhetoric to action, positioning healthcare as a central pillar of the administration’s 9- point SMART agenda. With a clear focus on improving outcomes, reducing mortality, and strengthening the healthcare system, the Aliyu led government is steadily redefining public health delivery in the state.

At the heart of these reforms is a strong commitment to safeguarding maternal and child health. Through expanded immunization programmes targeting diseases such as polio, measles, rubella, and HPV, alongside increased access to essential medicines, the government is tackling preventable illnesses head-on. Expectant mothers are being encouraged to attend antenatal clinics early, while children are receiving improved care to ensure healthy development.

A landmark initiative in this regard is the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives (MAMII), which underscores the administration’s resolve to address historically high maternal and infant mortality rates. Early indicators suggest a steady decline in these figures, signaling that the interventions are yielding tangible results.

One of the most pressing challenges inherited by the administration was the acute shortage of skilled health personnel, particularly in rural communities. Determined to reverse this trend, Governor Ahmed Aliyu approved large scale recruitment and deployment of healthcare workers. Over the past two years, about 1,500 nurses and midwives have been posted to facilities across the state, including 209 midwives strategically assigned to 109 primary healthcare centres.

Further strengthening this workforce expansion, the government has now approved the payment of salaries for 720 newly recruited nurses and midwives deployed across general hospitals and primary healthcare facilities in all 23 local government areas. This step not only boosts morale but also ensures sustained service delivery at the grassroots level.

In a complementary move to build professional capacity, the governor has approved the payment of examination fees for 22 foreign trained medical graduates to enable their certification with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. Similarly, 17 foreign-trained pharmacy graduates have received support to register with the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria. These interventions are strategic, as they fast-track the integration of qualified professionals into the state’s healthcare system.

Infrastructure development has also received significant attention. General hospitals across the three senatorial zones, including those in Wurno, Silame, Kebbe, and Gwadabawa are undergoing comprehensive upgrades. These renovations include the installation of modern medical equipment, expansion of wards, improved sanitation, solar power systems, and water supply through boreholes. The goal is to restore confidence in public health institutions and reduce congestion in tertiary facilities.

To address the long-standing issue of drug shortages, health Commissioner Dr Faruk Umar said the administration has ensured a consistent supply of essential medicines through the State Drug Management Agency. This has significantly reduced the burden on patients who previously had to seek costly alternatives outside government facilities.

Beyond investments in personnel and infrastructure, the Ministry of Health according to Dr Faruk, is intensifying oversight to ensure accountability and efficiency. Plans are underway for unscheduled inspections of health facilities across the state to enforce discipline and ensure that health workers are present and fully committed to their duties. This move reinforces the administration’s insistence on professionalism, punctuality, and adherence to ethical standards.

To further consolidate, the Commissioner said government has also strengthened partnerships with development agencies and donor organizations, positioning Sokoto as a key beneficiary of both national and international health interventions.

Taken together, these initiatives reflect a holistic and results driven approach to healthcare reform. Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s vision is clear and consistent, which is to build a system that guarantees affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare for every resident of Sokoto State.

As these reforms continue to take root, Sokoto is steadily emerging as a model of purposeful leadership in public health, where policy meets action, and where the well-being of the people remains the ultimate priority.

Sokoto APC Hails Election Victories of Achida, Hadiza

 

The Sokoto state APC Exco has extended its warmest congratulations to Hon. I. S. Achida on his election as the APC Zonal Secretary and Hadiza Alhaji on her victory as the APC Zonal Women Leader, both for the North-West geopolitical zone.

The state APC chairman, Hon. Haruna S.G. Adiya , who made the felicitations on behalf of the exco said the election of Hon. I. S. Achida, is a testimony of his dedication and commitment to the ideals of our great party. His leadership and experience will undoubtedly strengthen the party’s foundation and drive progress across the zone.

FG Determines to Tackle Insecurity in Zamfara as VP Shettima, Welcomes Gov Lawal to APC

The Federal Government has expressed it’s determination and commitment to end insecurity in Zamfara State.

This was disclosed by the vice president of Nigeria Kashim Shettima during a reception to welcome Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara into APC at trade fair complex in Gusau.

The Federal Government, according to him, has adopted several measures to make sure that the insecurity have come to an end in zamfara state and Nigeria as a priority of President Bola Ahmad Tinubu administration.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, who led 10 other governors, including the national party chairman, to formally welcome Governor Dauda Lawal into All Progressives Congress (APC) sympathize with the people of Zamfara State over the frequent bandits attack.

The Vice President welcomed the governor, assembly members, cabinet members, and thousands of APC supporters during a reception on Tuesday at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau.

The VP prayed for unity, progress, and peaceful coexistence under the Tinubu administration, assuring that the President is doing all he can to secure lives and property across the nation.

VP Shettima also said opposition parties like the ADC, PDP, and others will not win in Zamfara State because all major politicians in the state are united together.

He expressed full support for Governor Lawal, applauding the people of the state for their support for their governor and the APC.

In his speech, Governor Lawal assured party leaders and supporters of his commitment to ensuring fairness and justice for everyone. He also pledged to continue with his rescue mission working for the people of the State.

Former governors of Zamfara State: Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Muhammad Bello Matawalle Minister for state defense, and Mahmuda Shinkafi, graced the occasion and agreed to work with Governor Dauda Lawal 2nd term election bid.

The Sokoto Caliphate remains one of the most defining and enduring legacies in the political, intellectual, and spiritual history of West Africa. Established in 1804 by the renowned scholar and reformer Usman bn Fodio, the caliphate was far more than a territorial entity. It represented a transformative movement grounded in the pursuit of knowledge, the entrenchment of justice, and the institutionalization of Islamic jurisprudence as a guiding framework for governance and society.

It rose as a response to moral and social decline, and in doing so, laid the foundation for a system where leadership was inseparable from scholarship, accountability, and ethical responsibility.

From its historic seat in Sokoto, the caliphate became a beacon of learning and cultural refinement, attracting scholars, jurists, and students from across the region. It fostered a thriving intellectual tradition that emphasized literacy, education, and the application of Islamic law in public and private life.

The administrative structure of the caliphate demonstrated a sophisticated balance between central authority and regional governance, all unified under a shared moral and religious vision. This tradition of knowledge-driven leadership distinguished the Sokoto Caliphate as a civilization where governance was deeply rooted in principles of justice, consultation, and service to humanity.

In modern Nigeria, the legacy of the caliphate continues to resonate powerfully through the institution of the Sultanate. The Sultan of Sokoto, as the spiritual heir to dan Fodio, remains a central figure in the religious and cultural life of millions, providing guidance on matters of faith, unity, and national cohesion.

Beyond its spiritual authority, the Sultanate serves as a stabilizing force within the broader Nigerian polity, often playing a crucial role in conflict resolution, interfaith dialogue, and the promotion of social harmony. It embodies continuity between the past and the present, ensuring that the foundational ideals of the caliphate remain relevant in addressing contemporary challenges.

It is within this deeply rooted historical and institutional framework that the relationship between the present administration and the Sultanate Council must be understood. Contrary to persistent rumors and unfounded speculation, there has emerged a renewed and strengthened bond of cooperation and mutual respect between the government of Ahmed Aliyu and the Sultanate Council led by Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III. This evolving partnership reflects not only political alignment but a shared commitment to the welfare and progress of the people of Sokoto State.

For some time, detractors and mischief makers had sought to create the impression of discord between the two institutions. Part of this narrative was fueled by claims surrounding the 2023 gubernatorial elections, particularly the allegation that the Sultanate Council did not support the ambition of Governor Ahmed Aliyu. These claims, repeated in various forms, gave rise to the false belief that relations between the government and the Sultanate were strained or even adversarial. However, such insinuations have now been firmly laid to rest by clear and unequivocal actions and statements from both sides.

In a decisive demonstration of unity and goodwill, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III openly expressed his support for Governor Ahmed Aliyu and his administration during this year’s traditional Sallah courtesy call at the bouquet hall of the presidential lodge.This was not a mere symbolic gesture, but a substantive endorsement grounded in the administration’s visible commitment to development and social welfare.

The Sultan made it clear that the Sultanate Council is satisfied with the direction of governance in the state, particularly commending Governor Aliyu’s people oriented policies and its deliberate focus on improving the lives of the poor, the vulnerable, and internally displaced persons.

This alignment is significant because it reflects a convergence of values that is deeply rooted in the historical philosophy of the Sokoto Caliphate. The emphasis on caring for the less privileged, promoting justice, and ensuring inclusive governance are not new ideals, but rather enduring principles that have defined the caliphate since its inception. What is being witnessed today is, therefore, not an anomaly, but a continuation of a long standing tradition where political authority and moral leadership work hand in hand for the collective good.

Those who have long anticipated or even wished for a breakdown in the relationship between the government of Ahmed Aliyu and the Sultanate Council are bound to be disappointed. The reality on the ground points in the opposite direction. Rather than fragmentation, there is consolidation. Rather than conflict, there is cooperation. The bond between the two is being strengthened by a shared understanding of their respective roles and a mutual commitment to the welfare of the people.

This enduring alliance underscores a broader truth about governance in Sokoto and, by extension, northern Nigeria. Sustainable progress is most effectively achieved when institutional authority and moral guidance are aligned. The Sokoto Caliphate’s legacy has always demonstrated that governance is not merely about power, but about responsibility, service, and the pursuit of the common good. In reaffirming their partnership, the present administration and the Sultanate Council are not only preserving this legacy but also adapting it to meet the demands of contemporary society.

In the final analysis, the Sokoto Caliphate remains a living institution whose influence transcends history and continues to shape the dynamics of modern governance. Its enduring emphasis on knowledge, culture, and Islamic jurisprudence provides a moral framework that complements political authority. The strengthened relationship between the government and the Sultanate Council stands as a testament to this legacy, sending a clear message that unity, cooperation, and shared purpose will prevail over division and speculation.

Sokoto State Government Pledges to Fully Sponsor Future Ramadan Tafsir Programmes

The Sokoto State Government has pledged to fully sponsor future annual Ramadan Tafsir programmes organised by Jama’atul Izalatul Bidah Wa Ikamatul Sunnah (JIBWIS) across Sokoto State.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu made the pledge when he received members of the two wings of JIBWIS during separate Sallah homage visits at the Council Chamber, Government House, Sokoto.

The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting religious activities that foster unity, peace, and spiritual growth across the state, stressing that no amount of criticism would deter his administration from investing in promoting the Islamic religion.

Governor Aliyu assured the delegations that the burden of funding the programme would no longer fall on the public, stating that henceforth, no fundraising would be conducted in the name of contributing money for the Ramadan Tafsir programme in Sokoto State, as his administration is fully committed to taking care of it.

He clarified that individuals who wished to support the programme were free to do so privately through their respective organisations, without public fundraising efforts.

The Governor announced that the state government would establish a committee that would meet annually with leaders of the two JIBWIS factions to determine the funds required for the successful conduct of the programme.

Aliyu stated that supporting the growth and development of Islam in all aspects remains a key priority and one of the cardinal agendas of his administration.

Governor Aliyu praised the commitment and steadfastness of the two groups in this year’s Tafsir programmes in both metropolitan and rural communities of Sokoto State.

He advised the organisations to intensify efforts in teaching proper Islamic practices, including strict adherence to prayer and effective religious education.

Governor Aliyu further stated that his administration is committed to creating an enabling environment for Islamic scholars to propagate the teachings of Islam, and that his government will continue to support initiatives that promote Islamic values and principles.

He emphasized that the government is working tirelessly to ensure that Sokoto State remains a beacon of peace, unity, and spiritual growth in the region.

The Governor also seek for continued prayers against banditry and other form of criminalities, as his administration is working hard to address the security challenges affecting the state.

Imam Abubakar Mabera (Jos faction) and Alhaji Awwal Romo (Kaduna faction) thanked the Governor and prayed that Allah bless his administration.

They stated that this year’s Tafsir programmes were successfully conducted across Sokoto State, highlighting progress in guiding the faithful and promoting Islamic values.

The two Leaders commended the Governor’s efforts in promoting Islamic education and infrastructure development in the state, noting that his leadership has created a conducive environment for Islamic activities to thrive.

The meetings underscored the state government’s commitment to promoting religious harmony and constructive engagement with faith-based organisations in Sokoto State.

Sokoto Govt Pledges Stronger Collaboration with Federal Ministry of Works to Boost Development

The Sokoto State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works to accelerate infrastructural and developmental projects across the state.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu made the pledge when he received the Minister of State for Works, Muhammad Bello Goronyo, during a traditional Sallah courtesy visit at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Lodge, Government House, Sokoto.

The governor underscored the importance of strategic partnerships between the state and federal governments in ensuring the timely execution of critical road, transport, and public works projects aimed at boosting economic growth and improving the quality of life of citizens.

“Sokoto State is ready and willing to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Works. Together, we can implement projects that will connect communities, facilitate trade, and create new opportunities for our people,” Aliyu stated.

Governor Aliyu also commended the Minister for his dedication and remarkable efforts in attracting and advancing various developmental projects across the state.

He described the minister as a worthy son of the state, whose hard work and dedication continue to drive meaningful development across Sokoto.

Earlier In his remarks, Minister Goronyo commended the state government for its proactive approach to development and assured of the ministry’s continued support in delivering sustainable infrastructure projects across Sokoto State.

He noted that effective collaboration and coordination between federal and state authorities remain vital to the success of ongoing and future initiatives.

The minister also highlighted significant progress on the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway project, revealing that full clearance has been successfully completed from Illela through Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State along the Silame–Katami corridor. He described the development as a critical milestone in the execution of the strategic national infrastructure project.

The Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, a flagship 1,068-kilometre transnational route, is designed to link Nigeria’s North-West to the South-West, enhancing connectivity and facilitating the seamless movement of goods and services across regions. Upon completion, the project is expected to unlock vast economic opportunities and significantly boost trade and regional integration.

Sokoto State New APC Chairman Solicits for Unity, Support

The new Sokoto state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Haruna S. Adiya, has called for mutual understanding and support from his executive committee members.

He made the call during an inaugural meeting with the members.

The maiden meeting, which was held at the state party headquarters and attended by all executive committee members, marked a significant step in his leadership where he emphasized on loyalty, unity, cooperation and dedication as vital to the progress of the new exco.

He also pledged to make his leadership open to suggestions and advices so long as such would assist in moving the party towards success in all its political activities.

It could be recalled that the new executive committee members were elected through consensus on 3rd March, 2026 and were subsequently sworn on 7th March, 2026.

On the forthcoming Zonal Congress in Kaduna and National Convention in Abuja, the chairman revealed that adequate preparations have been made in respect to transportation and accommodation.

At the Kaduna Zonal Congress, two notable persons from Sokoto state are to vie for zonal Secretary and women leader. These are the erstwhile Sokoto state APC chairman, Hon. Isa Sadiq Achida for Zonal Secretary and Hajia Hadiza Alhaji for Zonal Women Leader.

The Kaduna Zonal Congress comes up on 25th March, 2026 while the National Convention comes up in Abuja from 27th -28 th March 2026.

Governor Aliyu Pledges Inclusive Governance, Receives APC Chairman on Sallah Homage

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has pledged to maintain open, transparent, and inclusive government that respects the views and aspirations of all citizens, as part of efforts to promote unity and sustainable development in the state.

Governor Aliyu made the declaration when he received the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Haruna S. Adiya, alongside members of the party during this year’s Eid el-Fitr Sallah homage held at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Lodge, Government House, Sokoto.

The governor emphasized that his administration remains committed to carrying every segment of society along in the decision-making process, noting that inclusive governance is key to achieving lasting peace and progress. He assured that policies and programmes under his leadership would continue to reflect the needs and yearnings of the people.

He further reiterated his administration’s focus on improving critical sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic empowerment, adding that deliberate efforts are being made to enhance public service delivery and strengthen institutions across the state.

According to him, Sokoto’s position as the Seat of the Caliphate places a responsibility on the government to uphold its legacy of justice, peace, and moral leadership.
Governor Aliyu also called on citizens to sustain the values imbibed during the holy month of Ramadan, including patience, sacrifice, and compassion, stressing that such virtues are essential for building a harmonious and progressive society.

He prayed for continued peace, stability, and prosperity in Sokoto State and Nigeria at large.

Speaking earlier, the APC State Chairman, Haruna S. Adiya, said the visit was to felicitate with the governor on the successful completion of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid el-Fitr.

He described the occasion as an opportunity to reaffirm the party’s loyalty and support to the administration.

Adiya commended the governor’s leadership style, noting that his policies and programmes are already yielding positive results across various sectors. He prayed for God’s guidance, wisdom, and good health for the governor as he continues to steer the affairs of the state.

The APC chairman also expressed confidence in the unity and strength of the party, praying for its success in the forthcoming 2027 general elections. He urged members to remain committed and supportive of the government’s development agenda.

The visit formed part of the traditional Sallah homage observed during Eid celebrations, where political leaders and stakeholders pay courtesy visits to the governor to celebrate and exchange goodwill.

Gov Aliyu Orders LG Chairmen to Relocate to Their Respective Areas

Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmed Aliyu, has directed all Council Chairmen of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state to relocate to their respective LGAs to ensure effective governance and closer engagement with the people.

The directive was given when he received the 23 Local Government Council Chairmen on a traditional Sallah courtesy visit at the State Banquet Hall, Presidential Lodge, Government House, Sokoto.

Governor Aliyu explained that the directive became necessary to bring governance closer to the grassroots, stressing that meaningful leadership requires direct interaction with the people.

“You can only truly understand the problems of your people if you live among them,” the Governor stated.

He further declared that the era of local government chairmen residing in the state capital while administering their LGAs is over, emphasizing the need to consolidate on the achievements recorded at the grassroots.

The Governor also urged the chairmen to be proactive and hands-on in managing the affairs of their respective LGAs to ensure improved service delivery and accelerated development.

In addition, Governor Aliyu revealed that the state government would make efforts to reclaim its official quarters across the 23 LGAs or construct new ones to provide accommodation for all council chairmen and other staff, noting that the move is necessary to enhance effective service delivery at the grassroots.

Speaking earlier, the State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Alhaji Abba Shehu Tambuwal, pledged the commitment of the chairmen to support the administration’s development agenda across the LGAs.

Alhaji Tambuwal assured the Governor that the chairmen would work closely with traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and security agencies to address challenges at the grassroots, while promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development in Sokoto State.

He also commended the Governor for his leadership and continued support for local government administration.

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Ta’ala Wabarakatuh.

On this joyous and blissful occasion of Eid el-Fitr, I stand before you with a heart full of gratitude and peace.

It is both a privilege and a profound honor to be granted this audience to extend our warmest congratulations and heartfelt felicitations to His Excellency and through him, to the entire good people of this historic and revered Caliphate.
Eid el-Fitr is far more than the celebration marking the end of Ramadan. It is a divine reward for a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and heightened devotion. It is a festival of gratitude to Allah (SWT) for the strength to complete the fast, a day of forgiveness, charity and communal joy. It embodies the core Islamic values of piety, compassion, generosity, and unity.

Your Excellency Sir, we are gathered here today not just as a formality, but as an expression of deep respect for your office and your visionary leadership which is transforming our dear state. It is an undeniable fact that Sokoto, as the Seat of the Caliphate, holds a unique and pivotal position in the spiritual, political and cultural landscape of Nigeria and beyond. The responsibility of steering this state is one that carries immense weight, and we acknowledge the dedication required to uphold its legacy of scholarship, peace, and progressive governance.

This courtesy call in its truest sense is to pay respects to you, to honor you, to share the joy and to collectively thank Almighty Allah for seeing us through the holy month of Ramadan.
