The Sokoto State Government has emphasized the importance of responsible reporting in journalism, describing it as a vital instrument for national development.
The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Alhaji Sambo Bello Danchadi, made this call at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Congress and public lecture held in Sokoto.
Danchadi stressed that journalism is a national duty that must be guided by truth, balance, and responsibility. He noted that patriotism in journalism does not mean hiding the truth but rather telling it constructively and accurately to promote peace, development, and public confidence.
The Commissioner highlighted the significance of professionalism and caution in media practice, especially in the face of Nigeria’s security and socio-economic challenges.
He emphasized that journalists are the custodians of the conscience of society and play a crucial role in promoting national development.
Danchadi reaffirmed Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s commitment to the media as a strategic partner in delivering the administration’s Nine-Point Agenda.
He cited recent investments aimed at strengthening state-owned media organizations, including the upgrade of the Sokoto State Media Corporation with new transmitters for Rima FM and modern broadcast equipment for Rima Radio and Television.
The Commissioner commended the NUJ Sokoto State Council for its recently concluded projects monitoring tour, which aimed to promote accurate, factual, and people-oriented reporting. The tour enabled journalists to independently assess development projects across local government areas, and a comprehensive report containing observations and recommendations would soon be submitted to the state government.
The NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Usman Mohammed Binji, thanked Governor Aliyu for approving the projects tour and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to professionalism, capacity building, and collaboration with stakeholders in promoting peace, transparency, and accountability.
