Authorities in Sokoto State have raised concerns over the emergence and spread of a dangerous secret cult group locally referred to as Sai-Malan, warning that its activities pose a growing threat to public safety across several parts of the state.
According to internal reports, the group believed to have originated from Illela Local Government Area has now extended its presence into Sokoto North, Sokoto South, and Goronyo LGAs. Security sources say the group is rapidly expanding its membership and influence, prompting calls for immediate action by government and security agencies before the situation escalates.
The group is reportedly involved in cultism, ritual-related violence, fraud, sexual crimes, and other forms of criminal activity. Intelligence sources also suggest that the group’s rise is being supported by influential political and business figures, giving it the confidence to operate with minimal fear of consequences.
Part of the group’s recruitment strategy includes distributing large sums of money to young people, offering motorcycles known locally as Roba-Roba, and initiating members through ritualistic practices. These incentives are allegedly used to lure impressionable youth into the cult.
Security agencies have been advised to look out for signs that may identify suspected members. These include the use of red Roba-Roba motorcycles, covered or modified number plates bearing skull insignia, reckless speeding within city centres, and incidents where money is distributed to youths, often followed by unexplained misfortune or victimization.
The report lists several areas within Sokoto metropolis where the group is believed to be particularly active, including Unguwar Rogo, Minannata, Tudun Wada, and parts of Mabera.
Authorities warn that if the group is allowed to continue operating unchecked, the consequences could be severe. Potential risks include an increase in violent crimes, ritual killings, kidnappings, rising road crashes linked to their reckless movement, and the possibility of the group forming alliances with established terrorist networks such as Boko Haram or bandit organizations.
The report outlines a number of urgent steps that should be taken to curb the spread of the group. These include intensified public sensitization through media and religious institutions, swift identification of the group’s sponsors and leaders, and decisive arrests and prosecution of offenders.
